Faces of the 54th

Born in New Bedford Massachusetts in 1846, Alexander H. Johnson enlisted in the 54th Massachusetts at 16 years old as a drummer serving with Company C. He served throughout the Civil War and participated in the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. Following his discharge, Johnson became an active member in the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) until his death in 1930.
